Text Box: See if you recognise this common story…

In the last few years I have bought three guitars and half a dozen ‘teach yourself guitar’ books and programmes. See pictures below.

After cherry picking a few things from each programme / book I learned a few things—some chords and some simple tunes but I never made enough progress to play the songs I really love. This meant that the guitars collected a lot of dust and I never got the satisfaction I was looking for.

Sound familiar ? - I know this is a common story. Well, all that changed when I started on a programme called Jamorama. The Jamorama programme gives you a simple process to follow to get you jamming along with the tunes you love. There is nothing missed out and they get straight to the point in each module. Now any song is an easy guitar song for me : -). Unlike Other programmes Jamorama allows you to Jam along with your favourite tunes. Other stuff I have tried has had my songs in a different key or using a different set of Chords—It just didn’t work. Perhaps you have had a similar experience?
Text Box: I have tried a lot of different courses and bought a few guitars. The problem was that I wasn’t really decided on a specific type of music I wanted to play—I wanted to play a wide range of easy guitar songs from classical through folk, pop and rock!

So of course I ended up with 5 different guitars, three of which I bought and two I was given, and had no idea how to play any of them properly! That’s all changed now that I have been studying the Jamorama course. I am focused on learning to play my steel stringed acoustic Fender with a pick (plectrum) the way it’s meant to be done. Anyway—about the types of guitar -
Classical Guitar / Spanish Guitar
This guitar has a very lightweight construction. The Strings are made of nylon rather than steel and have a mellower less ‘brassy’ tone. Because the strings are not steel they don’t need to be under so much tension and so the guitar neck is not reinforced with steel. That’s why the guitar is so light. The other noticeable difference is that the finger board is wider than a steel strung guitar. This means that the strings are slightly further apart. The result of this as a beginner was that forming chords was easier. The strings being further apart made chords less fiddly and the low tension in the strings made them easier to press down and produced less calluses! This type of guitar is designed to be played without a pick. The strings are plucked with the fingers and thumb of the right hand.
Electric Guitar
This type of guitar (mine is a fender Stratocaster copy by Encore) tends to be of a solid wood construction and is the heaviest of the guitars I have. The strings are steel and the neck of the guitar is steel reinforced. The guitar alone plays very quiet twangy sort of notes which can be handy for practicing. To get the real sound out of it you will need an amplifier and you can add extra electronic equipment to produce a range of funky sounds. You could spend a lot of time just experimenting with the different tones and sounds this type of guitar can make. Switch the amp to overdrive and rock!
Steel Strung Acoustic
This is probably the most common type of guitar. It has a brighter more ‘brassy’ tone than a classical guitar with a narrower finger board. These guitars are very flexible and can be played with a pick or with the fingers. The weight is more than the classical but less than the electric. This is the guitar I use most from my collection. I can play all types of music but I don’t need an amp or power supply.
Text Box: After trying a string of other methods I had learned a few basics; one scale, half a dozen chords, amazing grace —you know the standard stuff that most guitar students never get past.
Then I came across Jamorama online. The course uses very easy to follow videos in small steps and gives you all the other things you need but would normally try and get by without—check out the list of goodies below!

Text Box: It is a good idea to wipe the strings of your guitar with a duster after each session. Don’t
forget to get the back of the strings by tucking the duster under them and dragging it up
And down the finger board. If you don’t do this acid from your fingers will attack the strings
over time causing them to loose their tone and true pitch. They also turn an ugly black
colour.

Every now and again protect the strings by applying a thin layer of oil using a chamois
leather (don’t do this for nylon strings). You can get a specialist oil from your guitar / music
shop but a fine machine oil will do just as well. This will also help keep the finger board in
Good condition. Easy Guitar Songs will then sound good!

There are three main types of guitar available in the marketplace. The choice of guitar for you will really depend on the type of music you would like to play. There ia a lot more about this in the Jamorama Guitar Course but here’s my take on the basics:
